Sample Extracts from the Church Courts

The following are sample cases found in the Church Courts in which the Page family appear.

Acts of Instance

1663: Gravener v. Gower.  Alice Page alias Lewis wife of Thomas Page, agricola (husbandman), was a witness.  She was of Abcott, Clungunford, where she was born.  She had lived for 11 years at Bromfield.

1675: Anne Turner v, Hill.  John Page of Stoke Lacy 29 was a witness. He was born in Bromyard.

1680: John Page Rector of Coddington v. Jonathan Hartland of Colwall in a Tithe dispute.

1686:  Jane wife of William Morris v. Francis Page of Burwarton for defamation.   4 witness statements.

1716: Regarding the Will of William Page of Ludlow between John Page his nephew by his brother, John Evans & Edward Meredith against Catherine Page his widow and relict. Four witness statements survive by Richard Browne 45, Elizabeth Browne 40, Samuel Powys 50 and Edward Smalman 72, all of Ludow.

1721/2: Sarah Page of Ledbury widow aged 62 born Stroud, Gloucestershire a witness in a defamation case between Margaret wife of Edward drew of Ledbury and Richard Williams of Ledbury.
